The Loss, Spirit, Passion session at the 2023 Byron Writes Festival featured three bestselling Australian writers – Marele Day, Briohny Doyle and Heather Rose – talking about the intersection between grief and spirituality.

In the session we explored the key question: Where can we find solace after great loss? As you will hear, the path may involve a spiritual quest, solving a life-long shipwreck mystery, or even becoming a telepathic dog-whisperer.

This conversation, which will be presented in two parts, was recorded live at Byron Writers Festival 2023.

Meet Marele Day, Briohny Doyle and Heather Rose

Marele Day is an award-winning author of novels including the bestselling Lambs of God, which was published to acclaim in Australia and overseas, and became a multi-award winning miniseries. Marele Day's four-book Claudia Valentine series won her a Ned Kelly Lifetime Achievement Award for crime writing. Other novels include Mrs Cook: The Real and Imagined Life of the Captain's Wife, and The Sea Bed. Marele has more than twenty years' experience as a mentor and teacher of Creative Writing. She has served as judge for literary competitions including the Vogel Awards and NSW Premier's Literary Awards. She lives on Bundjalung country in northern New South Wales. Her latest book Reckless is a memoir.

As well as writing Why We Are Here, Briohny Doyle is the author of the acclaimed novels Echolalia, Adult Fantasy and The Island Will Sink. Her books have been recognised on lists for The Miles Franklin Literary Award, the Victorian Premier’s Literary Awards and The Melbourne Prize for Literature. Her writing has appeared in The Monthly, The Guardian, Meanjin, The Griffith Review, and The Age. She is a lecturer in creative writing at The University of Sydney, and a former Fulbright scholar.

In addition to her 2022 memoir, Nothing Bad Ever Happens Here, Heather Rose is the Australian author of eight novels. Her work spans literary fiction, magical realism, crime fiction, political fiction, fantasy and memoir. Her novels have won numerous prizes including the Stella Prize, the Christina Stead Prize, the Margaret Scott Prize and the ABIA General Fiction Book of the Year. Heather's last novel, Bruny, won the ABIA 2020 General Fiction Book of the Year. Her seventh novel, The Museum of Modern Love, won the 2017 Stella Prize. It also won the 2017 Christina Stead Prize. Heather's work has been published internationally and translated into numerous languages. She is a passionate teacher of writing and a mentor for developing novelists. She is also one half of the team who write the children's books published under the pen name, Angelica Banks. She lives between mountain and sea on one of the islands surrounding Tasmania.

Lambs of God is TV series based on Marele Day's bestselling novel of the same name. It is a dark, gothic tale about three nuns, each a generation apart, living in an isolated convent by the coast, and an unwelcome visitor who enters their lives and changes their world forever.
